How Opportunity Scholarships Work

Opportunity Scholarships are generated through donations to qualified scholarship-granting organizations (SGO). Individuals and organizations that donate to a scholarship-granting organization of their choice receive a tax credit for their donation. The SGO, in turn, grants scholarships to low- and middle-income families to attend non-public schools. In essence, citizens donate to private organizations that grant scholarships to other citizens to attend private schools. No money is being taken from public schools, nor does public money go directly to private schools. Likewise, these are not school “vouchers.”
