“In transforming culture so that it supports life, mujeres occupy a place, in thought and action, which is unique and decisive. It depends on them to promote a ‘new feminism’ which rejects the temptation of imitating models of ‘male domination’, in order to acknowledge and affirm the true genius of women in every aspect of the life of society, and overcome all discrimination, violence and exploitation.” (El Papa Juan Pablo II, El Evangelio de la vida [Evangelium Vitae], 99)

The Siena Symposium for Women, Family and Culture is an interdisciplinary think tank established in 1997 en la Universidad de St. Thomas in response to Blessed John Paul II’s call for an explicitly Christian feminism.

On the evening of June 27th, three members of the Symposium, which is hosted by the St. Pablo seminario, escuela de divinidad, will examine the false claim that the Church’s convictions on the primacy of religious liberty are in conflict with the “Derechos” of women.

Teresa Collett, professor of law at the University of St. Thomas, will speak from the perspective of the law; Dr.. Deborah salvaje, a clinical professor at the St. Pablo seminario, escuela de divinidad, will focus on the Church’s teaching on the subject; and R. Mary Lemmons, professor of philosophy at the University of St. Thomas, will speak about the misconceptions of sexual freedom currently at work in our culture. The event will be moderated by Jeanne Buckeye, profesor de ética y derecho empresarial, Universidad de San. Thomas.

For further information, contact Deborah Savage at pdsavage@stthomas.edu or Mary Lemmons at rmlemmons@stthomas.edu. O, visit the Siena Symposium website at http://www.stthomas.edu/spssod/continuing/siena/default.html.
