Expand the Minnesota Child Tax Credit

Investing in Families. Investing in Minnesota’s Future.

The Minnesota Child Tax Credit (CTC) has already made a significant impact—helping 224,000 families provide for their children and benefiting over 450,000 children across the state. But we can do even better!

We encourage lawmakers to expand the CTC so even more children benefit!

With 1.3 million children in Minnesota, expanding the CTC would provide much-needed relief to even more families, allowing them the freedom to structure their budgets in a way that best supports their children.

The Minnesota House of Representatives has included a CTC expansion in their tax bill via a "baby bonus." This proposal would provide families with newborns who qualify for the current Child Tax Credit a $100 bump in their credit. With families facing rising costs on essential items like groceries, any relief the state can provide makes a difference.

The House and Senate will be moving into conference committee to reconcile their differing bills soon, and we want to urge legislators to include the Child Tax Credit Expansion in their final bill.

Your voice matters! send a message to your state legislators, urging them to support the expansion of the Child Tax Credit.

Additional Information:

Several proposals to expand the Child Tax Credit were introduced in both the House and the Senate. The most impactful proposal would expand the CTC by 20%. This would extend benefits to 112,000 families, likely reaching 200,000 more children.

  • The CTC provides families with a reduction in the amount they owe in taxes each year.
  • If a family owes nothing, they receive the amount as a refund.
  • The credit is worth up to $1,750 per child, with no cap on the number of eligible children.
  • The average amount received per filer is $2,500, while the average per child is approximately $1,200.

The Legislature has also proposed to offer a baby bonus to families welcoming newborns.

  • The original bill would provide $400 per newborn whose family already qualifies for the Child Tax Credit
  • The proposal included in the House Tax bill moves the amount from $400 down to $100. Still, any relief families can get is worthwhile!

Expanding the CTC means more financial stability, stronger families, and a brighter future for Minnesota’s children.
