RE: Minnesota Catholic Conference Support for Choose Life License Plate

Dear Sen. Mathews and Rep. Mekeland,

We write to express our support for the effort to make Choose Life License Plates available in Minnesota (H.F. 482/S.F.432). Thank you for introducing this legislation that will encourage more mothers to embrace the gift of life.

As the Minnesota Catholic Conference, the public policy voice of the Catholic Church in Minnesota, we applaud efforts that support creating a more pro-life society. Allowing the creation of Choose Life License Plates in Minnesota would do just that. Not only would they promote a consistent ethic of life for those who see them while driving down the highway, but they would contribute to assisting women who find themselves in difficult situations, particularly by providing resources for those who are considering adoption.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has reiterated many times that protecting the unborn is the preeminent issue of our day and that we have a responsibility to walk with moms in need. Supporting mothers from the very first moments of their child’s existence is vital. We recognize that not all women who find themselves pregnant are in a situation to raise that child, and in these cases, adoption is a very worthy option.  Adoption allows an expectant mother to provide a more stable life for her child than perhaps she is able to offer at the time. It also allows a child to become a gift to a family—whether to a couple who is unable to have children due to fertility struggles or to a family who is open to welcoming more children into a stable home. Dedicating funds to this cause will make a difference.
