2023 Fall Pro-Life Summit

We hope to create a society in Minnesota in which every child is welcomed in life and protected by law.

Despite the jubilation we all felt after the Dobbs decision, pro-life efforts have become more difficult after the 2023 legislative session. We look forward to bringing together you and over 100 pro-life leaders on Wednesday, September 27, to begin a conversation about the next steps for our local movement. We hope to at least see whether, through the work of the Holy Spirit, we can build common ground around a shared vision among this ecumenical group of leaders. Unity in the movement will strengthen our efforts. Much like in the Church, there are many gifts and charisms within our movement, and galvanizing them around a central purpose will allow us to work together like a symphony orchestra.  

Our sense is that the pro-life movement cannot simply be anti-abortion, in the sense of an exclusive political focus on stopping the supply of legal abortions. Rather, we need to find practical ways to walk with mothers and families in need while at the same time building towards a time in which we can end the extreme abortion provisions that stain our state. Some examples of how we may accomplish this in the short term is by working with legislators to pass policies that increase family economic security such as by eliminating the state sales tax on necessary baby items like cribs and car seats. We also need to work to change the hearts and minds of our fellow Minnesotans who do not see or understand the harm caused by abortion, and educate them about the political process beyond elections.

We are eager for you to join us, the Catholic bishops of Minnesota and our partner organizations, to engage in conversations about how to protect human life and promote the common good in our state.
