Inforum: Letter: The Catholic Church’s economic and social impact
Janelle C. Gergen from the Diocese of Crookston writes: "I encourage readers to explore "Fruits of the Vine" and see the full scope of the Catholic Church’s contributions to Minnesota."
The Catholic Church’s impact in Minnesota extends far beyond the walls of its parishes.
A new report, "Fruits of the Vine: The Economic Impact of the Catholic Church in Minnesota," highlights the Church’s vital contributions to our communities — not only in spiritual and moral formation but also in education, healthcare and charitable services.
Commissioned by the Minnesota Catholic Conference and prepared by researchers at University of Colorado, Colorado Spring, "Fruits of the Vine" shows that Catholic institutions in Minnesota generate nearly $5 billion in economic activity each year. This impact is seen in Catholic schools educating thousands of students, hospitals and clinics serving the sick and vulnerable, and charities assisting those in need — regardless of their faith background.
Here in the Diocese of Crookston, our parishes, schools and Catholic organizations play a crucial role in supporting families and strengthening communities. They provide jobs, social services and an irreplaceable moral foundation that encourages civic engagement and care for the most vulnerable.
I encourage readers to explore "Fruits of the Vine" and see the full scope of the Catholic Church’s contributions to Minnesota. The report reminds us that faith communities are essential to Minnesota’s economic and social well-being. This report is a reminder that the Church is not only a place of worship but a vital partner in building a just and flourishing society.
By recognizing and supporting its work, we can help ensure that Catholic institutions continue to serve the common good for generations to come.
